Cub Camp 4 – 6 July 2003

This years Cub Camp was a new experience for cubs & leaders alike and for some wetter than others. We kept our recent record of camping in warm and sunny weather, this time next to the river Thames at Longridge Scout Boating Centre, Marlow.

13 cubs camped for the weekend and were joined by 3 cubs on the Saturday along with 5 beavers. The boys were fully up for the challenges of the weekend and went kayaking, bell boating and on a gentle powerboat trip along the Thames. In addition there was more traditional scouting activities including wall climbing, with Akela leading the way up the wall, to the surprise of some of the cubs.

The camp started on Friday night with Daniel and Ryan making their promise and being invested.

Saturday morning was the usual cubs start to the day with the boys being up and about at 5am, still it was such a pleasant day! Once the leaders had had enough cups of tea and breakfast, they carried out a full kit inspection which meant all kit out of the tents, laid out on sleeping bags then packed away nice and neat, something the cubs really enjoyed.

We were joined by the beavers on Saturday who now link with the cubs at camp to enjoy a scouting weekend and give them a taster of what we do in cubs.

As a result of activities carried out during the weekend Charlie, Bradley and William achieved the Outdoor Challenge Badge.

At the Monday meeting following the camp, the boys who went camping explained to the other cubs what they had been missing and listed what they thought of the weekend, here are some of their comments:

1. Kit inspection boring

2. Bell boating great

3. Putting up tents great

4. Kayaking brilliant

5. Power boating interesting

6. Assault course painful

7. Wall climbing hard

8. Water polo hard

9. Puzzle pen confusing

10. Walk tiring

11. Food nice

12. Camp fires fun

Cub of the camp was Josh who showed amongst other things how to lay out kit for inspection, he even received praise from a Scout Leader!

With any camp the success of it depends on the hard work of the leaders and helpers and thanks go to Karen Glass & Debbie Harknett for providing lunch on Sunday, the leaders Pete Street, Julia Hawkes, Neil Peppard and Charlie Eaglestone.
