Scouts, Cubs and Beavers attended Group Camp at Horley Scout Camp over the weekend of 26 – 28 September. As usual sunny weather was ordered and we were not disappointed.
12 Scouts and 14 Cubs camped over the weekend and were joined by 5 Beavers on the Saturday.
Friday night was night hike time, with the aim of giving the boys the experience of being out in the pitch black and trying to tire them out. The hike finished around midnight after which hot chocolate and cake was served. Not being tired out some of the scouts took on the challenge of seeing how long they could stay up, 2am was well passed before all was quiet.
On the Saturday the scouts spent most of the day building sleeping shelters (bivouacs) and a number of them braved the dropping temperature and slept in them.
The cubs and beavers competed for the games challenge. Four teams undertook a number of races including water carrying, big boot race and balancing race. Medals were awarded to the winning team.
Saturday afternoon the cubs and beavers built a gateway, when it was on the ground it looked to be about the right size. Once we started to erect the structure we realised just how big it was. (See photo) a super achievement by the boys at their first attempt of pioneering.
There was still time to go on the zip wire, which both cubs and beavers were up and they were soon zooming down the wire at speed, with a little help from the leaders.
The beavers again enjoyed their time at camp and were delighted that their numbers included new members. If any more boys would like to join Beavers and experience lots of fun and make new friends please contact any leader in the group.
Beavers Michael and Alex were presented with their Friendship Awards.
Sunday the cubs all achieved the challenge of the climbing wall, which will count towards their Outdoor Challenge Badge.
Bradley was Cub of the camp for his skills at camping and for meeting the challenge of the wall climb, when for the first time he made it to the top and abseiled down.
There was a surprise presentation made to two leaders, it was a well-kept secret organised by GSL Nick Davis. The Acting District Commissioner presented, Assistant Scout Leader Pete Street and Cub Scout Leader Nick Smith with their wood badge. The badge is a recognition of all the hard work undertaken in completing all their training, including a number of projects and an interview with the District Commissioner.
Thanks go to the support given by parents who shopped, prepared, cooked and delivered some of our meals to camp. This support gives the leaders much more time with the boys and means we can have a very active weekend.
