Clive & Julia Gray

Julia and Clive first became involved in scouting in the Bartons when they replied to the 1st Bartons Scout Group’s cries for help for Venture Scout Leaders. Clive and Julia took over from Bill and Christine Edbury running the Venture Scout Unit in the Winter of 1993. Assistant Venture Leader was Roger Lydiatt who had previously been a Venture Scout and was a Queen Scout

The first Venture Scouts were Andy Duval, Karen Chesterman, Chris Pickup, Stuart Monk. They winter camped in the Peak District, climbed in North Wales, camped in the Lake District, Youth Hostelled with Winter Mountaineering at Patterdale, canoed on the canal at Banbury and Marlow Scout Site on the Thames.

After another leadership crisis, Julia moved to Cubs to help Jill Elliot, and eventually took over as Akela when Jill moved over to help run Beavers; a relatively new section in our Group. Starting Beavers in our village was another of Clive’s claims to fame.

Eventually Clive became Group Scout Leader (G.S.L.) in another of the Group’s leadership shuffles. It’s a very important job and required one extra special bit of kit to allow Clive to do it really well - Julia. You’ve all heard of “the power behind the throne”, that expression was dreamed up with Clive and Julia in mind. It takes a great team to do what Clive and Julia have managed, and that’s just what they are, a great team.

Clive and Julia along with little Elliot moved to Northumberland at Easter and they will be sorely missed by all involved in scouting and by the many friends they have made in the village.
